Famine in Lebanon

The escalation of violence has reversed progress made in fighting hunger in Lebanon. This is stated in a new report by experts in the field of food security, prepared by the country’s Ministry of Agriculture together with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the World Food Program (WFP). According to the analysis, between April and August 2026, about 1.24 million people – almost one in four Lebanese residents – will be in a food insecurity crisis. This is a serious deterioration compared to the period from November 2025 to March 2026.

He emphasized that the rights of all citizens of the country must be fully respected. Since Israeli and US strikes on Iran began two months ago, nine people have been executed in connection with the January 2026 protests, ten more for alleged involvement in opposition groups and two on espionage charges. Since February 28, it is estimated that more than 4,000 people have been detained on national security-related charges. Members of ethnic and religious minorities are particularly at risk.

Warming Europe

All of Europe is facing the widespread impacts of climate change. This is stated in the State of the Climate in Europe 2025 report, published on Tuesday, prepared by the European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). The report’s authors emphasize that Europe remains the fastest-warming continent in the world. At least 95 percent of the region’s territory in 2025 recorded temperatures above the annual average. In addition, the area of snow and ice cover is decreasing.

Today the UN marks the first International Day of Remembrance for Earthquake Victims, established by the General Assembly last year. The day aims to honor those killed in these disasters and mobilize assistance for affected communities. In his message, UN Secretary-General António Guterres stressed that the key to protecting the population is effective precautionary measures – from regular training exercises to stricter building codes and smarter urban planning.
