The main news of the day in the UN and in the world: a WHO warehouse in the Kiev region of Ukraine was damaged as a result of the attack, the UN is calling for $49.6 million to provide relief to flood victims in Nepal, food prices rose in August, today is World Sexual Health Day.
Strike on the WHO warehouse
An air strike yesterday damaged one of the main warehouses used by the World Health Organization (WHO) in the Kyiv region of Ukraine to store humanitarian medical supplies. Over the past three months, this is the third attack on warehouses used by WHO in different regions of the country. Despite the attacks, the organization continues to work with health partners across Ukraine. WHO stresses that strikes on warehouses could delay or disrupt the delivery of aid to those who need it most. The UN and its partners today launched an urgent appeal for $49.6 million to help more than 84,000 people affected by severe floods and landslides in northern Nepal. The disaster has claimed the lives of more than 1,250 people, with thousands still missing and entire villages forced to flee their homes. Responses are aimed at meeting people’s basic needs. Humanitarian efforts will restore damaged water networks, deploy water purification systems and deliver hygiene products to stop the spread of disease.
Food prices
Food prices have risen in the past months. The main factors for the growth of quotes were unfavorable weather conditions, the conflict in the Middle East and interruptions in exports in the Black Sea region. These are new data from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). Due to disruptions in exports from the Black Sea region, lower production forecasts in hot and dry regions of Europe, and a weaker dollar, wheat prices rose 2.6 percent, 15 percent higher than last year.
Sexual and reproductive health
The fourth of September is World Sexual Health Day. The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) reminds us of everyone’s right to bodily autonomy, access to appropriate services and protection from discrimination and violence. September also marks World Sexual and Reproductive Health Month. WHO emphasizes: sexual and reproductive health is the foundation of overall health and well-being.
