About 60 civilians were killed and more than 240 were injured in attacks across Ukraine over the weekend. UN spokesman Staffan Dujarric announced this at a briefing for journalists in New York on Monday, citing data from UN humanitarian workers on the ground and Ukrainian authorities.
The Kyiv region, including the capital of the country, was hit the hardest. A drone strike on an ammunition depot caused a massive explosion that killed 38 people, including residents of an elderly care facility. Another 52 people were injured in this incident, many of them children. About 200 houses were destroyed or damaged.
On the front line, in the Kherson region, four people were killed and another 60 were injured over the weekend. Civilian casualties were also recorded in the Donetsk, Dnepropetrovsk, Kharkov, Odessa, Sumy and Zaporozhye regions.
Dujarric repeated the call of the UN Humanitarian Coordinator for Ukraine Matthias Schmale for all parties to take measures to protect civilians population.
According to the press secretary, UN humanitarian agencies continue to provide assistance to the victims. In the Kyiv region, the World Health Organization delivered medical supplies to hospitals where the wounded are being treated. The Ukrainian Red Cross Society and several local non-governmental organizations, with the support of UN agencies, are providing psychosocial and psychological assistance to people, providing drinking water and monetary support. Medicines, hygiene kits and other essentials were delivered to the approximately 700 residents who remain in the area.
