According to a new study by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the International Labor Organization (ILO), conducted jointly with the Thunen Forestry Institute, the global forest sector employed about 42 million people in 2022, representing approximately 1.2 percent of total employment. This is 3.1 percent less than in 2011.

The study includes global data disaggregated by gender for the first time: women hold about 10.6 million jobs, representing 25 percent of all employment in the sector. However, the gender gap remains most pronounced in Europe, while it is less pronounced in Africa, the Americas and Asia.

“To develop a crisis-resilient forest sector, it is important to understand who works in it, and gender-disaggregated data is key,” said Wu Zhimin, Director of the FAO Forestry Division.

Majority of jobs The forestry sector is concentrated in wood and wood products (about 58 percent) and in the pulp and paper industry.

The new study is based on data for 182 countries, covering 99 percent of the world’s forest resources, and is part of FAO’s Global Forest Resources Assessment project. The new model used by the report’s authors produces annual and more accurate employment estimates that take into account countries’ socioeconomic and demographic indicators.
