The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) today welcomed the repatriation of 32 children and 15 women from Syria by Tajikistan. The foundation said it highly appreciates the government of Tajikistan’s fulfillment of its obligations under the Convention on the Rights of the Child and promoting the reintegration of children and mothers into families and communities.

The UN has repeatedly called on countries to repatriate their citizens still living in difficult conditions in displacement camps in Syria and Iraq.

“UNICEF is working with countries, including Tajikistan, to support the reintegration of children back to their countries of origin in accordance with their citizenship,” UNICEF said in a statement.

The Children’s Fund supports the Government of Tajikistan in providing family-based care, individual assessment of the needs of children and mothers, protecting their mental health, and ensuring their access to education and employment opportunities . All this contributes to the psychosocial recovery and development of children, UNICEF notes.

“Supporting children and families returning from conflict zones is critical to ensuring their successful reintegration into communities.” , – say the Children’s Fund.
