The United Nations Integrated Transition Assistance Mission in Sudan (UNITAMS) completes its withdrawal from the country on Thursday. In this regard, the UN Secretary-General expressed his deep gratitude to all international and national staff of UNITAMS for their “dedication and service to the people of Sudan” throughout the duration of the mission’s mandate.

A small team of United Nations staff will remain in Port Sudan to oversee the liquidation process, which begins on March 1, according to UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric. The Secretary-General, Dujarric added, looks forward to effective cooperation with the Sudanese authorities in this process.

“The conflict that continues to rage in Sudan undermines the rule of law, impedes the protection of civilians, and threatens the future of the country and the region as a whole,” the UN spokesman said in a statement. “The Secretary-General calls on the parties to the conflict to lay down their arms and engage in peace negotiations that will lead to a resumption of civilian-led democratic change.”

Special Political Operation – UN Integrated Assistance Mission Transition Assistance in Sudan – was established in June 2020. In mid-November last year, the Sudanese authorities asked the UN to immediately stop the work of UNITAMS. Previously, Mali and the Democratic Republic of the Congo asked to withdraw UN missions. to support the Sudanese people in their quest for a peaceful and secure future.

The Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy to Sudan, Ramtan Lamamra, has begun work to support mediation efforts in coordination and close partnership with African and other international partners. These mediation efforts will complement the ongoing work of the United Nations country team on the ground, which includes humanitarian assistance.
