UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called for restoring harmony with nature in his message on the occasion of International Mother Earth Day, which is celebrated on April 22.

“Humanity is behaving towards Mother Earth like a juvenile delinquent,” said the head of the UN.

By poisoning the planet with all sorts of pollutants, recklessly destroying ecosystems and species, and destabilizing the climate with greenhouse gas emissions, we are jeopardizing food production, creating hazardous environments and hindering sustainable development, Guterres said.

According to him, there is an urgent need to address the problem of biodiversity loss, stop polluting the environment and significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions on a global scale.

In addition, support must be given to indigenous peoples, local communities and others who are most affected by environmental crises.

Climate justice is also required for countries at the center of “climate chaos.”

To this end, the Secretary General called on countries to develop new national climate plans that will be aimed at limiting global temperature rise of 1.5 degrees Celsius. In addition, the global community must make efforts to phase out the use of fossil fuels and stop supporting environmentally damaging industries such as plastic production.

“Restoring our relationship with Mother Earth is the key to solving all the problems facing humanity. We must act—and act now—to build a better future for us all,” the UN chief stressed.
