UN Secretary-General António Guterres welcomes the latest diplomatic efforts, including visits by senior US officials to Moscow and Kyiv, and hopes that these initiatives will lead to a resumption of negotiations between Ukraine and the Russian Federation. At the same time, he calls for an end to ongoing attacks on civilians and infrastructure.
As UN chief spokesman Stephane Dujarric said today, the Secretary-General hopes that the resumption of negotiations will pave the way for an immediate, complete and unconditional ceasefire, followed by a just, comprehensive and lasting peace in accordance with international law, including the UN Charter and relevant resolutions Organizations.
“The United Nations stands ready to support all meaningful efforts aimed at achieving this goal,” said the UN representative.
However, the Secretary-General remains deeply concerned about the ongoing attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure in Ukraine, as well as in Russia Federation, and calls for an immediate end to them.
Guterres called on the parties to ensure the conditions necessary to continue diplomatic efforts.
Children among the victims
Meanwhile The Children’s Fund (UNICEF) warns that over the past seven days, at least 18 children, one child, have been injured in died.
After the attacks on Kyiv, UN agencies and their partners provided first aid, psychosocial support to the victims, and also provided hot meals and building materials for emergency repairs.
Humanitarian agencies UN note, that the attacks are affecting an increasingly large area, resulting in assistance being needed far beyond the areas immediately adjacent to the front lines.
Energy Infrastructure Support
Meanwhile, the Administrator of the UN Development Program Alexander De Croo visits Ukraine. At the center of his four-day visit – critical energy infrastructure support, winterization and recovery.
Since the start of the full-scale invasion, Ukraine has become one of the largest UNDP operations. About 50 percent of the country’s generating capacity is damaged or disabled. UNDP helps keep electricity, heating, water and other vital services running, while helping to create a more sustainable, decentralized and greener energy system. The organization operates in all 24 regions of Ukraine, including frontline areas and areas with a high level of security threats.
De Croo will meet with government representatives, residents of war-affected areas, veterans and young Ukrainians who have been living in war for four and a half years.
