UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is saddened by reports of the death of Iranian President Ibrahim Raisi, the country’s Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian and their colleagues in a helicopter crash on May 19.
According to media reports, on board the helicopter were also the head of the Iranian province of East Azerbaijan Malik Rahmati, the imam of Tabriz – the capital of this province – Ayatollah Mohammad Ali Al-e-Hashem, the commander of the presidential security unit, several bodyguards and crew members .
A helicopter flying to Tabriz crashed in a remote area in the forested mountains. The search and rescue operation, complicated by rain and fog, lasted for long hours.
The Iranian delegation was returning from Azerbaijan, where Raisi took part in the opening ceremony of a dam built by two countries on the Araks River.
The UN chief expressed condolences to the families of the victims, as well as the government and people of Iran.
