The High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development concluded its work in New York with the adoption of a ministerial declaration. Countries reaffirmed their commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and called for increased efforts to achieve the 2030 Agenda.
“With less than five years until 2030, the challenge ahead is not just about accelerating the pace of work. We must work differently, collaboratively and decisively,” said UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) President Lok Bahadur Thapa.
According to him, achieving the SDGs can no longer be seen in terms of one goal, sector or organization. This requires comprehensive policies, stronger partnerships and effective international cooperation.
Over four thousand participants
The forum was held from July 7 to 15 under the auspices of ECOSOC. More than four thousand representatives from governments, businesses, civil society, youth, academia, UN agencies and other organizations participated daily.
Participants presented innovative solutions, shared experiences and discussed strengthening partnerships to accelerate progress towards achieving the SDGs.
Particular attention was paid to five goals: Clean Water and Sanitation, Affordable and Clean Energy, Industrialization, Innovation and Infrastructure, Sustainable Cities and Human Settlements and Partnerships for Sustainable Development. Participants emphasized that comprehensive action in these areas has the potential to accelerate implementation of the entire 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. results,” said UN Secretary-General António Guterres.
He cited the Pact for the Future, the Seville Commitment, the Doha Political Declaration, the High Seas Agreement and the Antigua and Barbuda Agenda for Small Island Developing States as examples.
60~p>The UN chief also noted progress in collection and analysis data that allows countries to better define development priorities. He said next year’s SDG Summit would provide an important opportunity to build on momentum and mobilize political will, funding and international solidarity.
Forum participants stressed: The Sustainable Development Goals are already delivering results, but the global community now urgently needs to scale up effective solutions.
