International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Secretary-General Doreen Bogdan-Martin announced on Tuesday more than $9 billion in investment commitments from mobile operators to improve and expand the global communications network. The announcement was made at the Mobile World Congress currently underway in Barcelona.

The new commitments bring the total value of planned investments in global mobile communications and Internet infrastructure to more than $46 billion.

“Creating a universal mobile communications network is within our reach,” said Doreen Bogdan-Martin. “With these new commitments, millions of people will benefit from affordable, accessible connectivity around the world.”

The International Telecommunication Union also announced that, in addition to 193 Member States, it currently has over a thousand members from industry, academia and non-governmental organizations.

Among other things, the Mobile World Congress announced a commitment of six billion dollars to provide accessible and affordable communications and digital services in Middle East countries. More than $1.4 billion will be used to deploy fiber optic networks to remote villages across China; 1.1 billion – to provide connectivity in emerging markets across a wide area from North Africa to the Indian Ocean.

International conglomerate VEON announced allocating $600 million to modernize Ukraine’s telecommunications infrastructure, providing communications and digital services necessary for the country’s recovery.

According to the International Telecommunication Union, about 2.6 billion people remain without communications worldwide. In this regard, the ITU has called for an investment of $100 billion by 2026 to provide full universal connectivity to people in every corner of the globe.
