Artificial intelligence is becoming an integral part of the healthcare system in Europe. According to the authors of a new report from the World Health Organization (WHO), all 27 countries of the European Union consider AI as a tool for improving the quality of medical care, while the majority are already actively using such technologies in practice.

So, almost three quarters of EU countries use AI in diagnostics  to analyze medical images and help doctors make diagnoses. More than half of countries use chatbots to help patients get reliable information.

Adapting healthcare systems

Against this backdrop, healthcare systems in Europe are quickly adapting to new realities. In a number of countries, specialized positions for specialists in AI and data analysis have already appeared, and medical schools and continuing education programs are increasingly including training in working with such technologies.

New challenges and responsibilities for doctors

However, along with new opportunities, challenges also arise. Despite the use of algorithms, legal and ethical responsibility for clinical decisions still lies with healthcare professionals. In this regard, there is an increasing emphasis on training in AI so that healthcare professionals can understand its principles and critically evaluate recommendations. In most EU countries, specialists, patients and the public are already involved in discussing the use of AI in medicine. Experts stress that introducing such technologies without taking into account people’s opinions can lead to mistrust, even if they work effectively. For example, focusing on three areas: training specialists, open dialogue with society and creating centers for safe testing of new technologies.
