Strikes on Ukraine

A massive attack on Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv region and other parts of the country early Friday morning reportedly killed eight civilians and injured many, including children. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres strongly condemned Russia’s attack on civilian targets in Kyiv and other regions of Ukraine. The UN humanitarian coordinator in the country, Matthias Schmale, expressed deep regret over a new wave of drone and missile strikes that caused damage to residential buildings, medical facilities and heating systems in the city.Thousands of people reportedly remain in El Fasher after armed groups seized the North Darfur capital last month following a lengthy siege. The blockade has resulted in people having to eat peanut shells and animal feed, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk said on Friday. He condemned the mass killings of civilians, executions based on ethnicity and other crimes that reportedly continue in the region. At a meeting of the Human Rights Council in Geneva, Türk reported that traces of blood in El Fasher are visible even from space.

Climate Change

The effects of climate change are fueling a health emergency. More than half a million people die every year as a result of extreme heat. This is stated in a report presented by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Brazilian government at the UN Climate Conference (COP 30). The report’s authors warn that one in 12 hospitals could close due to climate change. Meanwhile, a coalition of more than 35 philanthropic organizations today pledged $300 million to advance climate and health solutions.

Tackling Diabetes

November 14 marks World Diabetes Day, with this year’s theme being “Diabetes in the Life Course.” The World Health Organization emphasizes that the disease affects people of all ages and requires constant attention throughout life. According to WHO, the prevalence of diabetes continues to rise rapidly, especially in low- and middle-income countries. The organization reminds people that diabetes can be controlled. A combination of diet, exercise, medication, and treatment of complications helps slow the progression of the disease.
