Search and rescue efforts continue in eastern Afghanistan after heavy rains and floods hit the region yesterday. According to preliminary data, more than 40 people were killed, dozens were injured, and many more are missing.
As reported by the UN, the disaster caused serious damage to residential buildings, public buildings and commercial facilities. The scale of destruction continues to be determined.
UN humanitarian organizations, together with partners, are assessing the needs of the population and preparing response measures. Priorities include providing temporary housing, food assistance, medical services, basic necessities, and psychosocial support to the population.
Mobile medical teams have been sent to the affected areas. Medical facilities have been put on high alert, and additional supplies of medicine, therapeutic nutrition and food are being transferred.
The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) is providing assistance to the population together with partners and local authorities. Damage to roads and mountainous terrain complicate rescue and humanitarian operations.
