On December 19, 2024, an airstrike on a World Food Programme (WFP) field office in Yarbus, Blue Nile State, killed three staff members. UN Secretary-General António Guterres expressed his deep outrage at the incident.

“The Secretary-General is deeply outraged by the killing of three WFP staff members in Sudan,” the UN chief’s press office said in a statement.

The UN chief sent his condolences to the families of the victims and their WFP colleagues. He stressed that he “condemns all attacks on UN staff, humanitarian workers and their facilities” and called for “a thorough investigation.”

“Yesterday’s incident highlights the devastating impact of the brutal conflict in Sudan on the millions of people in need of support and the humanitarian workers trying to deliver life-saving aid to them,” the statement said.

2024 already recognized as the deadliest year for humanitarian workers in Sudan. Despite serious threats to their safety, the staff continue to carry out their mission.

The Secretary-General also reminded the parties to the conflict of their obligations to protect civilians, humanitarian personnel, facilities and supplies. “Attacks against them must be ruled out and all feasible precautions must be taken to avoid harm,” he said.

After more than 20 months of armed conflict, the Secretary-General reiterated the need for an immediate ceasefire. “The UN will continue to support international mediation efforts and work with all stakeholders to help end the war,” he assured.
