Anniversary of the September 11 attacks
Twenty-five years ago, the September 11 terrorist attacks claimed thousands of lives and left an indelible mark on world history. The UN paid tribute to the memory of almost three thousand victims – citizens of the United States and more than 90 other countries. Speaking on behalf of the UN chief, his spokesman said: “We pay tribute to the survivors and honor the memory of the emergency responders who showed exceptional courage and humanity in the face of tragedy.” The Secretary General called on the international community to reaffirm its commitment to building a future free of terrorism.
The situation in Yemen
The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs is concerned about the situation in Yemen. Today, in the city of Moha, on the territory of a UN humanitarian center, eight vehicles of the Organization were seized. Such incidents make humanitarian operations difficult. The UN calls for compliance with international law, a cessation of hostilities and the protection of civilians and humanitarian workers. The UN Security Council on Thursday held a meeting dedicated to the situation in Yemen and the Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia.
Ukraine: visit of the head of the UNDP
The head of the UN Development Program, Alexander De Croo, condemned the drone strike on the protective structure of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. According to him, attacks on Ukrainian nuclear facilities are “a game with the safety of millions of people.” De Croo is on a four-day visit to the country. He said that over the past four years, UNDP has raised $1.3 billion to help Ukrainians. One of the main areas of its work remains the restoration of the energy sector: thanks to the organization’s support, more than 6.5 million people have access to electricity. The head of the UNDP warned that amid ongoing attacks, the coming winter will be extremely difficult.
Suicide
Every year, 727 thousand people in the world commit suicide. Among people aged 15 to 29, suicide was the third leading cause of death in 2021. To draw attention to this global problem, WHO established World Suicide Prevention Day. It is celebrated on September 10. To protect the public and prevent suicide, WHO recommends limiting access to means of suicide, including firearms and some medications, responsible media coverage, teaching adolescents emotional and social skills, and early identification and support of people with suicidal tendencies.
