Two trucks carrying food aid for starving families in Sudan’s South Kordofan state were destroyed in an airstrike over the weekend. The UN World Food Program (WFP) announced this today.
The WFP strongly condemned the attack, which occurred on August 30 near the town of Dilling.
The trucks were carrying 50 tons of food – cereals, split yellow peas, vegetable oil and salt. These supplies would be enough to provide life-saving assistance to 5,800 people for a month.
The trucks were en route to Kadugli, where WFP is supporting nearly 58,000 people suffering from food insecurity. The vehicles were clearly marked with the logos and flags of the UN agency. Sudan.
The UN has repeatedly called for an end to the war between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Action Force, which began in April 2023.
The conflict last year left 30 million in need of humanitarian assistance people.
Since January, WFP has recorded eight airstrikes that have damaged its facilities and disrupted humanitarian activities.
“Attacks on humanitarian workers and the disruption of humanitarian operations are unacceptable and must stop,” WFP said, calling on all parties to respect international humanitarian law and ensure the protection of civilians, humanitarian workers and humanitarian facilities.
