Monday’s main events in the UN and the world: another series of attacks on the territory of Ukraine, a Security Council meeting on Haiti, a session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee, a high-level meeting on road safety.
Series of attacks on Ukraine
As a result of the strikes carried out last weekend on the territory of Ukraine, 12 civilians were killed and dozens were injured. As the Secretary General’s press secretary Stephane Dujarric said during a briefing in New York, two UN humanitarian warehouses were damaged – the World Food Program in Dnipro and the World Health Organization in the Kyiv region. UN agencies and United Nations humanitarian partners quickly provided emergency assistance to the victims. 11 tons of humanitarian aid were delivered to the front-line settlements of the Kherson region. They included bottled drinking water, hygiene kits, first aid kits and medicines.
Security Council meeting on Haiti
The UN Security Council discussed the crisis in Haiti on Monday, calling on the international community to seize the chance to change the situation. Despite the ongoing violence, the country’s authorities continue to prepare for the elections: a new electoral decree has been adopted, a budget has been approved and voter registration has begun. The International Anti-Banditry Force, supported by the UN, conducts patrols and operations against armed groups. The number of personnel in the Force is planned to be more than doubled. The UN emphasizes that long-term international support, funding and close cooperation with the Haitian authorities are needed to stabilize the situation.
Session of the World Heritage Committee
The 48th session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee began its work in Busan, Republic of Korea. The Committee will consider applications for inclusion of 30 new sites on the World Heritage List. Among the nominees are the beaches of Normandy, France, where the Allied landings took place, and medieval castles in southern Lebanon. In addition, the Committee will assess the state of conservation of 147 sites already inscribed on the World Heritage List – many of which have been damaged during modern armed conflicts. To date, there are more than 1,200 sites on the List, located in 170 countries. World Health Organization. Its main theme is accelerating the implementation of commitments to reduce the number of deaths and injuries from road traffic accidents by 50 percent by 2030. The UN reminds that 1.2 million people die every year as a result of accidents, with 92 percent of such deaths occurring in low- and middle-income countries. Participants at the meeting at UN headquarters will discuss measures to accelerate the implementation of the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021–2030.
