The UN Secretary-General welcomes the United States’ decision to provide an additional $1.8 billion in funding for the humanitarian work of the UN and its partners around the world.
According to a statement by the UN Secretary-General’s spokesman, this commitment will allow humanitarian organizations to provide life-saving support to millions of people in acute crisis situations.
UN Emergency Relief Coordinator Tom Fletcher supported the Secretary-General’s statement, emphasizing that the new US contribution comes at a time when global needs are rapidly growing and funding is being cut.
“This support will help save millions of lives,” he said.
The $2 billion US contribution, announced last December, has “stabilized a system under extreme pressure,” Fletcher said. The UN acted quickly, with $1.68 billion in “needs-based assistance” for 22 million people in 18 crisis situations. humanitarian organizations are increasingly coming under attack. “But we have proven that we can deliver help even in the most difficult conditions,” Fletcher added.
