Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and UN Emergency Relief Coordinator Tom Fletcher is currently visiting southern Ukraine. United Nations spokesman Stephane Dujarric announced this at a briefing at the UN headquarters in New York.  

On Tuesday, Fletcher visited the front-line Nikolaev and Kherson regions. In Kherson, he met with displaced families living in collective accommodation, and also talked with patients at the regional hospital, who told him about the psychological consequences of living in front-line areas. Among them were victims of drone attacks who suffered severe physical injuries.

The deputy UN chief also met with the governor of the Kherson region and discussed with staff of humanitarian and local volunteer organizations the difficulties they face in their work.

Meanwhile, UN humanitarian agencies report that attacks across Ukraine on Monday and Tuesday morning resulted in deaths and injuries. wounding several civilians. In the Kharkov region, a missile attack on the village of Pechenegy led to the death of at least 10 people, and about 20 more were injured. In the Kherson region, attacks on energy infrastructure facilities caused large-scale power outages. 

Despite the dangers, humanitarian organizations continue to provide assistance to people across the country, Stephane Dujarric emphasized during the briefing. Thanks to donor support, they were able to provide assistance to approximately three million people in the first half of the year. Among residents of frontline areas, 60 percent of the population received support.
