Nearly three-quarters of Ukrainian newborns are breastfed within the first hour of birth—an important step that promotes the health of both mother and baby. However, only 43 percent of infants aged 0-5 months receive exclusive breast milk, as recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF). This is according to research data for 2025-2026, published by the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, UNICEF and WHO on the occasion of World Breastfeeding Week.

Health protection in emergency situations

Breast milk remains one of the most reliable ways to protect the health of babies, especially during emergencies, the UN emphasizes. Breastfeeding does not require boiled or purified water, sterilized bottles, or access to pharmacies. Mother’s milk is safe and accessible even in the absence of electricity and water supply.

In this regard, the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, UNICEF and WHO called for increased support for families with small children and wider dissemination of scientifically based information about breastfeeding.

“The foundations of a child’s health are laid in the very first moments of life. That is why supporting breastfeeding is not only a matter of infant nutrition, but also a critical component of child health policy. Even in the conditions of a full-scale war, we must provide every child with the best conditions for life and development,” said Minister of Health of Ukraine Viktor Lyashko.

Only breast milk up to six months

WHO and UNICEF recommend that babies be fed exclusively breast milk for the first six months of life. It contains all the essential nutrients for healthy growth and development, and also helps protect the baby from diseases. For the first six months, babies do not need water, tea, juice, formula or any other liquids or foods.

“Every mother should be able to feed a child exclusively with breast milk for the first six months of life and longer, while receiving the necessary support,” said Anne-Claire Dufay, head of the Ukrainian office of UNICEF. benefit not only children, but also mothers.

“Children who are breastfed have a lower risk of developing overweight, obesity and type 2 diabetes later in life. Mothers have a reduced risk of breast and ovarian cancer, as well as non-communicable diseases such as obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease. However, the study showed that among Ukrainian children aged six to 23 months, 56 percent already drink sugary drinks, and 21 percent drink junk food.

In case of difficulties for parents It is advised to seek help from medical professionals or lactation consultants. In addition, experts urge fathers and other family members to support mothers by doing housework, providing them with rest, and providing emotional support. Employers must provide childcare time and a safe and comfortable environment for breastfeeding and pumping.
