Middle East

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres calls for a diplomatic solution to the conflict in the Middle East, as well as the protection of civilians and civilian infrastructure. His press secretary Stephane Dujarric said this at a briefing in New York. He stressed: “The Secretary-General is extremely concerned by the statements we heard yesterday and again this morning: statements that imply that an entire people or an entire civilization may be forced to suffer the consequences of political and military decisions.” The UN chief noted that there is no military objective that would justify the total destruction of infrastructure or the deliberate infliction of suffering on civilians.

Resolution on the situation in the Strait of Hormuz

The UN Security Council on Tuesday failed to adopt a resolution proposed by Bahrain on the situation in the Strait of Hormuz. China and Russia vetoed it. The document spoke of the need to protect freedom of navigation in the strait and encourage coordinated “efforts of a defensive nature,” including the escort of merchant and commercial vessels. Iranian spokesman Amir Saeed Iravani said the resolution’s purpose was to “punish the victim of aggression.” Russian Ambassador Vasily Nebenzya said that his country, in conscience with China, will propose an alternative, more “balanced” version of the resolution. In the Dnepropetrovsk region of Ukraine, several people were killed and about ten were injured. Civilians were also affected in Donetsk, Kharkov, Kherson, Odessa, Sumy and Zaporozhye regions. The UN and its partners are providing medical and psychological support to the victims and helping to transport the wounded to hospitals. UN Humanitarian Coordinator in the country Matthias Schmale reiterated the need to protect civilians.

Migrant deaths in the Mediterranean Sea

More than 180 migrants are believed to have died or gone missing recently as a result of shipwrecks in the Mediterranean Sea. According to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the total number of victims in 2026 is already approaching a thousand. The death toll has been rising steadily, even as the flow of migrants arriving in Europe by sea has plummeted. The organization calls for coordinated measures to save people, as well as expand legal migration routes to reduce dependence on dangerous routes.
