The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said on Wednesday that intense fighting in Ukraine’s front-line areas continues to cause widespread destruction and force local residents to flee high-risk areas.

According to the latest report of the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in the country, the number of civilian casualties between June and November increased significantly in both front-line and urban areas – by 37 percent compared with the previous six months.

In eastern Ukraine, the Donetsk region suffers the most from shelling and hostilities. According to local authorities, since the beginning of December, more than ten civilians have been killed and almost 60 injured in Ukrainian-controlled areas of the region. The cities of Kramatorsk and Slavyansk were particularly hard hit early this week.

Ukrainian non-governmental organizations – with the support of UN agencies – quickly delivered emergency aid – materials to repair damaged windows and roofs, and also provided psychological support to the victims.

Amid growing threats, more and more families are leaving dangerous areas of the Donetsk region – on their own or through government-organized evacuations with the support of humanitarian organizations. According to local authorities, since August, almost 72 thousand people have left the Donetsk region, including about eight thousand children.

Humanitarian organizations are helping civilians at all stages of their journey throughout Ukraine – from leaving populated areas to transit centers and temporary accommodation sites for internally displaced persons.

From front-line areas About 500 people have been evacuated from Zaporozhye in the last two weeks. National NGOs opened an inclusive temporary evacuation center to provide comprehensive support for people with disabilities and limited mobility. The project received funding from the Humanitarian Fund, administered by OCHA, and continues to support local frontline workers providing assistance to those who need it most.
