The UN Security Council adopted a resolution on Thursday, according to which the current Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa and Interior Minister Anas Khattab are excluded from the sanctions list against ISIS (Daesh) and al-Qaeda.
Fourteen of the 15 members of the Security Council, including the Russian Federation, voted in favor, China abstained.
The text of the resolution confirms “commitment to full respect for the sovereignty, independence, territorial integrity and national unity of the Syrian Arab Republic.”
Security Council members also stated “their intention to promote the long-term reconstruction, stability and economic development of the Syrian Arab Republic.” However, such efforts, according to the document, should not affect the integrity and effectiveness of the sanctions regime against ISIS (Da’esh) and Al-Qaeda.
