UN Emergency Relief Coordinator Tom Fletcher in Zaporizhia. UN to continue supporting Ukrainians UN
UN Emergency Relief Coordinator Tom Fletcher and UNHCR Chief Filippo Grandi are visiting Ukraine this week. On Thursday, they will present a plan to help millions of Ukrainians by 2025.
More than 12.7 million Ukrainians and 6.8 million Ukrainian refugees worldwide need support.
On Tuesday, Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Tom Fletcher visited the Kharkiv region, including Shevchenko, about 30 kilometers from the front line, and the town of Kupyansk, two kilometers from the front line.
The UN is working with its partners in these areas, including providing transport for local residents to access basic services. These communities are home to many elderly people who have difficulty reaching various services. Fletcher had previously visited Zaporizhia.
Later, UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi joined Fletcher at a joint press conference with the governor of the Kharkiv region. He stressed that the UN would continue to deliver aid to all those in need.
“We assured him [the governor] that the UN would continue to support the authorities’ efforts to keep their citizens warm, safe and strong as a third consecutive winter exacerbates hardship in Ukraine’s war-torn frontline areas,” Grandi wrote on his X-platform page.
Fletcher and Grandi will travel to Kyiv on Thursday to jointly present the government’s humanitarian aid and response plans for 2025, which aim to continue delivering critical aid to people affected by the war.
