One of the greatest masterpieces of Gothic architecture, Notre Dame Cathedral, is being reborn after a devastating fire in 2019. UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay emphasized the significance of this work, calling the restoration of the cathedral “a symbol of the strength and unity of humanity.”
A Symbol of Human Unity
“The restoration of the Cathedral is not only the restoration of an architectural masterpiece, but also a symbol of the strength and unity of humanity,” said Azoulay, expressing deep gratitude to the specialists and millions of people who supported this project.
The reconstruction work has become a unique example of the combination of modern science, traditional craftsmanship and international cooperation. Under the guidance of leading architects, restorers and historians, it was possible to preserve the unique elements of the cathedral: Gothic vaults, stained glass windows and the famous spire, which is being restored in exact accordance with its original appearance. UNESCO is working closely with France in this effort, ensuring that the restoration meets strict international standards for the conservation of World Heritage.
Continuing the work
Audrey Azoulay said it was vital today to ensure that the restoration work continues with the same dedication and professionalism, and that the Cathedral remains a source of inspiration for millions of people.
The official reopening ceremony after the renovation is scheduled for this weekend, and is expected to be attended by dozens of heads of state and government, as well as religious leaders from around the world.
