The Special Envoy’s statement comes amid intensified diplomatic efforts. Pedersen said he held meetings in Doha with the foreign ministers of Iran, Russia and Turkey, as well as with representatives of the United States, France, Great Britain, Germany and the European Union. He expressed optimism, noting that key players support his call for a resumption of negotiations.

The proposed talks are aimed at resolving the protracted conflict in Syria and are intended to chart a path to stability. The UN requires that special attention be paid to the protection of civilians and compliance with international humanitarian law. “This must be the beginning of a process that will lead to the realization of the legitimate aspirations of the Syrian people,” the Special Envoy said. Pedersen also reiterated his call for de-escalation and the prevention of further bloodshed.

During ongoing consultations, the Special Envoy expressed hope that a date for the Geneva talks would be announced soon. He noted the dynamic situation in Syria and allowed for the possibility of new statements on Sunday. “The situation in Syria is changing,” he stressed.
