Approximately one in eight people on the planet has a mental disorder. World Mental Health Day: Provide qualified help to everyone in need Healthcare

Without mental health, there can be no health in general. This was recalled in his message on October 10, when the world celebrates World Mental Health Day.

“About one in eight people on the planet has a mental disorder,” says António Guterres in his message. “Such disorders occur in all groups and societies. Suicide remains a leading cause of death among young people, and millions continue to suffer in silence.”

This year, World Mental Health Day focuses on addressing mental health in the workplace. Sixty percent of people over 15 years of age work and spend most of their time at work.

“But workplaces are much more than just spaces where we do our jobs,” the UN Secretary-General said. “A safe and healthy workplace helps people feel meaningful, connected and stable, while a depressing or chaotic work environment can have a detrimental impact on mental health.”

Since the COVID-19 pandemic ushered in a new era of remote working, the boundaries between home and work have become increasingly blurred, making it even more challenging to protect the mental health of staff.

“Work matters to well-being; well-being matters to work,” António Guterres stressed. “When employers take steps to address mental health risks in their organizations, it improves morale, reduces absenteeism, and increases employee engagement and productivity.”

According to the UN chief, it is essential that everyone, both in and outside the workplace, has the knowledge and resources to take charge of their mental health, and is able to access quality mental health services without stigma or barriers.
