Moldovan Prime Minister Dorin Recean has declared his country’s solidarity with Ukraine, called for “an end to the illegal Russian presence” in Transnistria, and accused Russia of “a hybrid attack” against Moldova aimed at dividing its citizens.
The people of Moldova will not allow themselves to be deprived of their subjectivity, the head of government emphasized. The world, according to him, is a much safer place when small countries have a significant voice and the choice of their people is respected.
Dorin Recean noted that generations of human rights activists have fought for Moldova’s right to choose, to preserve the identity of its people. “They have succeeded, they have achieved independence,” he added.
Next to Moldova, the speaker continued, there is an “unjust, unprovoked war between Russia and Ukraine.” “This war is throwing us back to the times when great powers, in order to satisfy their cynical geopolitical interests, sought to divide regions into spheres of influence and annex smaller neighbors, depriving them of their right to vote,” Recean said. For Moldova, this is “a serious looming threat,” he said. “The Kremlin does not want us to sit at the table, the Kremlin wants us to be food on this table,” the prime minister added.
Ukraine, the prime minister is convinced, “is fighting not only for its own statehood, for its nation, for its survival – it is fighting for the freedom of each state to choose its own destiny.”
He expressed solidarity with Ukraine and called on all countries to assist it in this fight.
The prime minister also stated the need to end Russia’s “illegal presence” in Transnistria and resolve the region’s problem within the framework of Moldova’s territorial integrity.
