Another barrage of rockets hit Ukrainian cities on Monday, according to UN humanitarian workers. Dozens of people were killed and a children’s hospital was significantly damaged as a result of Russian shelling.

UN Humanitarian Coordinator in Ukraine Denise Brown condemned the attack. According to her, several cities were attacked, including the capital, Kyiv, Krivoy Rog and Pokrovsk.

“The attacks occurred in the morning, when people were starting their day. Dozens of people were killed and injured,” Brown said. She also reported significant damage to a children’s hospital in the center of Kyiv.

“Shameless” attack on children

“This is a shameless attack because children are killed and injured in this war. Hospitals have special protection under international humanitarian law. Civilians must be protected,” the UN Humanitarian Coordinator emphasized.

Escalation of violence

Last week UN Office Human Rights Watch reported that May saw the highest number of civilian casualties from Russian attacks in nearly a year.

According to a report by the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine, between March 1 and May 31, at least 436 civilians were killed and another 1,760 wounded. The casualties included six media workers, 26 medical workers, five aid workers and 28 emergency workers.

The UN report said the majority (91 percent) of the casualties occurred in , controlled by Ukraine, and nine percent in Russian-occupied territory.

During the same reporting period, Russian authorities reported that 91 civilians were killed and 455 injured in Russia as a result attacks carried out by Ukrainian armed forces, primarily in the Belgorod, Bryansk and Kursk regions.

More than 20 killed

At least 20 people were reportedly killed in Monday’s attacks. In addition to the Okhmatdyt children’s hospital in Kyiv, other civilian infrastructure was damaged, as well as commercial and residential buildings in cities such as Dnepr, Kramatorsk, Krivoy Rog, Kiy and Pokrovsk.
