As part of his tour of Central Asia, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres arrived in Almaty, Kazakhstan on Wednesday. In the afternoon, the UN chief left for Astana, where he will meet with the country’s President Kassym-Zhormart Tokayev.

The UN Secretary-General began his visit with a meeting with the UN country team. Kazakhstan is an active member of the United Nations and is a leader in nuclear disarmament and primary health care. As UN Resident Coordinator in Kazakhstan Michaela Friberg-Storey stated, “Kazakhstan is a strong supporter of multilateralism and values its partnership with the United Nations.”

The United Nations began its activities in Kazakhstan in early 1993, shortly after the country joined the UN in March 1992. Today, 28 UN agencies, funds and programmes operate in this Central Asian republic. In 2023, the UN team in Kazakhstan consisted of 494 staff, including 427 national and 67 international.

At the UN office in Almaty, António Guterres got acquainted with a photo exhibition telling about the residents of Kazakhstan who not only achieved special success with the support of the UN, but also contributed to the development of the country. The exhibition, which we wrote about in April, is called “The UN and Me”. From students to doctors and entrepreneurs, from civil society representatives to politicians and agronomists – each story testifies to the strength of the human spirit and the importance of support from the global community.

This is already the second official visit of António Guterres as UN Secretary-General to Kazakhstan. The first took place in 2017. On July 4, the head of the UN will take part in the summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, which is taking place in Astana.
