The assault on the Southern Hospital in the besieged Sudanese city of El Fasher has led to its closure, with a severe impact on the population that is in dire need of medical care amid the conflict, the World Health Organization (WHO) reports.
“WHO is appalled by the attack on Southern Hospital, the only facility with surgical capacity in El Fasher, Darfur. The closure of the hospital after the attack has left two other hospitals overburdened,” says the WHO page on the X platform.
The hospital had to be closed, according to media reports after the Rapid Reaction Force entered the building and opened fire. Doctors Without Borders, an NGO that helps run the clinic, reported on X that militants stole equipment and an ambulance.
WHO also condemned the attack on a health facility in Wad -an-Nur in the state of El Gezira south of Khartoum, which killed a nurse.
“WHO strongly condemns attacks on the health system. Health workers and patients should not risk their lives providing or attempting to access health services,” WHO said.
UN High Commissioner for Rights Volker Türk had previously spoken out about the “devastating impact” of clashes between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the El Fasher Rapid Reaction Force on civilians.
Türk warned that more than 1.8 million city residents and displaced people are under siege “and face imminent risk of starvation.”
Any further escalation “would have a catastrophic impact on civilians and worsen intercommunal conflict,” he stressed. High Commissioner.
According to the UN World Food Program (WFP), 18 million people in Sudan are experiencing severe food shortages, and 5 million are suffering from severe hunger.
“This is the largest number [of hungry people] ever recorded during the harvest season… About 90 percent of those in the emergency are in areas where access is extremely limited due to heavy fighting,” the WFP said.
