Against the background of the rapid spread of the Ebola virus in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the UN mission in this country quickly deployed its aviation resources and delivered them to the city of Bunia, the administrative center of the province, within a few days Ituri, about 30 tons of medical cargo. Among them are personal protective equipment, laboratory equipment, medicines and tents for accommodating patients.
In addition, four cars and two motorcycles were delivered to Bunia to support work on the ground.
The activities of the UN Stabilization Mission in the DRC (MONUSCO) are not limited to the delivery of humanitarian aid. The mission’s military, police and civilian staff conduct information campaigns among the population. Thus, local residents were told about basic preventive measures, such as maintaining personal hygiene, as well as the risks associated with eating wild animal meat.
Similar events were held in Fataki among internally displaced persons and local residents. Using loudspeakers, mission representatives reminded about the need for regular hand washing, proper use of personal protective equipment and timely recognition of Ebola symptoms.
As the mission notes, such measures are aimed at raising awareness and protecting the most vulnerable groups of the population.
According to the latest data, in the DR Congo More than 500 suspected cases of the disease have been registered. The total number of deaths since the outbreak began has exceeded 130 people. There is no vaccine against the currently circulating strain of the virus, and there are no approved treatments.
