View of Caracas, the capital of Venezuela. Venezuela elections: UN Secretary General calls for peaceful settlement of all disputes UN
The UN Secretary-General has paid tribute to the Venezuelan people for their determination to express their will peacefully by voting in the presidential elections over the weekend, the UN press service said on Monday.
“We have taken note of the statement by the electoral authorities, as well as the concerns expressed by politicians and members of the international community,” the UN said. The Secretary-General calls for full transparency in the vote count and the timely publication of results by polling station.
“The Secretary-General expresses confidence that all disputes related to the elections will be addressed and resolved peacefully, and calls on all Venezuelan political leaders and their supporters to exercise restraint,” the document emphasizes. To guarantee the free expression of the will of voters, the UN Secretary-General reminds, electoral bodies must be independent.
In Venezuela, the National Electoral Council declared the victory of the incumbent President Nicolás Maduro in the elections. For Maduro, this will be his third six-year presidential term.
