The main news of the day in the UN and in the world: The Global Dialogue on AI Governance started in Geneva, the Human Rights Council adopted a resolution on the situation in Sudanese El Obeid, the UN condemned the Russian attack on Kiev, the Secretary General presented a report on protecting the population from genocide and other mass crimes.

AI Control

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Monday called for the development of a global system to regulate artificial intelligence (AI). Speaking at the opening of the first UN Global Dialogue on AI Governance in Geneva, the Secretary-General also emphasized the need to ensure access to technology for the billions of people who are not yet benefiting from the digital revolution. The Secretary-General named the protection of children as one of the priorities of the future agreement and invited states to adopt a Global Commitment to the Safety of Children in the Use of Artificial Intelligence.

Conflict in Sudan

The UN Human Rights Council on Monday adopted a resolution under which an investigation will be carried out into the catastrophic situation in the Sudanese city of El Obeid and its environs. On Friday, the Council held an emergency meeting to discuss the situation of civilians in the area. Meanwhile, according to the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), children continue to bear the brunt of the ongoing war in Sudan. In the first six months of 2026, at least 330 children were reported killed or injured. According to UNICEF, about 60 percent of them were injured as a result of drone attacks.

Strikes on Ukraine

UN Humanitarian Coordinator for Ukraine Matthias Schmale condemned another massive attack by Russian armed forces on Kyiv, which occurred just days after a large-scale attack on the capital. As a result of the shelling, civilians were killed and injured. Shmale noted that the Sumy region came under fire over the weekend. Strikes were also carried out in Dnepropetrovsk, Kherson, Kyiv, Zaporozhye and other regions. This resulted in further civilian casualties, destruction of homes and civilian infrastructure, and disruption of access to basic services.

Protection of civilians

UN Secretary-General António Guterres called on states to strengthen measures to prevent genocide and other international crimes. The report on the implementation of the principle of responsibility to protect was presented to the General Assembly on behalf of Guterres by the head of his Office, Earl Courtenay Rattray. He noted that too often early signs of mass crime are ignored. The report calls for investment in national mechanisms to prevent atrocities, and also reaffirms the responsibility of states to cooperate with affected groups, civil society, regional and international organizations.
