The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) says the humanitarian situation in Gaza remains dire despite ongoing relief operations across the strip.
Last Sunday, UN Deputy Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process Ramiz Alakbarov completed a four-day trip to Gaza, where he met with UN colleagues, visited humanitarian construction sites and spoke with people struggling to survive in dire conditions as winter approaches.
Alakbarov stressed the importance of unhindered access to the humanitarian sector and the need for UN non-governmental partners to provide assistance to those in need throughout Gaza.
Health
UN partners responsible for providing health care to Gazans continue to restore service delivery throughout the sector: already 234 medical aid points are functioning, compared to 197 before the ceasefire. However, shortages of critical medical supplies remain in the enclave.
Housing and Education
Housing needs in Gaza remain extremely high, with approximately 1.5 million people in need of urgent support. Last week, aid workers distributed tents, awnings, bedding, kitchen kits and winter clothing vouchers to some 4,300 families.
The sector reopened 18 of the 31 temporary learning spaces, allowing about eight thousand children to resume schooling.
Over the weekend A record 160 high-strength tents have been delivered to Gaza for school use, but stationery and other educational materials are still in short supply.
Since the ceasefire, 123,000 families in Gaza have received cash assistance, exceeding the 60-day target of 120,000.
