Gaza

Speaking at a Security Council meeting on the situation in the Middle East on Monday, the UN Secretary-General called on the international community to seize the opportunity presented by the ceasefire and hostage release agreement in Gaza to step up efforts to address governance and security issues in the Strip. Guterres stressed that the UN continues to increase humanitarian aid to Gaza: yesterday alone, more than 630 trucks with humanitarian supplies arrived in the Strip.

Israel

UN Special Coordinator for Lebanon Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert began her visit to Israel today, where she will meet with senior Israeli officials. The main topic of discussions will be steps taken to implement the cessation of hostilities agreement, which entered into force on 27 November 2024, and UN Security Council Resolution 1701. Before her trip, the Special Coordinator welcomed the progress achieved with the withdrawal of the Israel Defense Forces and the redeployment of Lebanese armed forces to positions in southern Lebanon.

Ukraine

Civilians, including children, were injured in attacks on Kyiv, Kryvyi Rih and Zaporizhia over the weekend. This was reported on Monday by the staff of the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs. Civilian infrastructure was damaged as a result of the shelling. According to local authorities, dozens of people were killed and wounded in the frontline areas of Donetsk, Kharkiv and Sumy regions. Humanitarian Aid Coordinator Matthias Schmale allocated $70 million from the UN Humanitarian Fund for Ukraine to provide assistance to the population.

Kazakhstan

Experts of the UN Human Rights Council will consider the situation in Kazakhstan this Thursday. During the upcoming session of the Working Group on the Universal Periodic Review, which will be held from 20 to 31 January, the situation in 14 countries will be assessed. The Working Group includes 47 states, but any of the 193 UN member states can take part in the country review. The universal periodic review is an expert assessment of the human rights situation in a particular country. The delegation of Kazakhstan will be headed by the Minister of Justice of this country, Erlan Sarsembayev.
