Lake Baikal. World Wildlife Day: How digital technologies help preserve biodiversity Climate and Environment
People around the world rely on wildlife and biodiversity-based resources to meet their needs for food, fuel, shelter and clothing. World Wildlife Day, celebrated on March 3rd, allows us to reflect on its role and highlight the important conservation work being done around the world.
“Human activity is having a devastating impact on our wildlife. Human ingenuity can help save it,” said UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.
This year the Day is dedicated to the role of digital technologies in preserving the planet’s wildlife and biodiversity.
“This year’s World Wildlife Day theme reminds us that digital technology can make a difference. Satellites are already helping to track endangered animals. And data on wildlife migration and land use helps us in our efforts to protect them,” the UN chief said.

World Wildlife Day is also an opportunity to highlight the diversity and beauty of wild fauna and flora. The Day also reminds us of the need to strengthen efforts to combat wildlife crime, which has negative economic, environmental and social impacts.
“We depend on nature. Let’s show that nature can rely on us and start acting now to protect it,” concluded the Secretary General.
