UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk. Volker Türk concerned about reports of violence against protesters in Venezuela Human Rights

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk is concerned about rising tensions in Venezuela and reports of violence following last Sunday’s elections.

Demonstrations have been taking place in at least 17 of Venezuela’s 24 states and the capital district. Police have used tear gas and rubber bullets in clashes with protesters, with some fatalities, according to media reports. Hundreds have been arrested, including children.

“I am alarmed by reports of disproportionate use of force by law enforcement officers, as well as violence by armed individuals who support the government, known as ‘colectivos,’” Türk said.

“Those responsible for human rights violations must be held accountable,” he added.

The UN’s top human rights official has stressed that Venezuela is at a critical juncture. He called on the authorities to respect the rights of all Venezuelans to peaceful assembly and protest, as well as to freely express their views.

“All Venezuelans have the right to meaningful participation in decisions that affect their lives and the future of their country, including through credible elections. I join the Secretary-General’s call on Monday for a peaceful resolution of the electoral disputes,” Türk said.

He noted the need for timely publication of election results, broken down by polling station. Electoral bodies must be independent and operate without external interference to guarantee the free expression of voters’ will and protect their rights, the High Commissioner concluded.
