Any transition in Gaza must support unity with the West Bank and a two-state solution. UN Secretary-General António Guterres announced this on Tuesday, speaking at a press conference at the Second World Summit on Social Development in Doha.
Journalists asked him about coordination with Israel and US President Donald Trump’s 20-point plan for the Gaza Strip, which calls for the deployment of a temporary international stabilization force in the enclave.
Expanding humanitarian aid operations
The Secretary-General said the UN is actively involved in ensuring that humanitarian assistance in Gaza increases significantly and reaches the entire population. He added that the United States has been instrumental in ensuring that “Israel at least gradually removes some of the obstacles and difficulties that still exist” in this regard. “We actively support the principle that the ceasefire must be respected, that all parties are obliged to comply with it, that the next stage must ensure communication between Gaza and the West Bank,” he continued. He noted that the US is developing a draft Security Council resolution on Gaza in consultation with other current members, but the UN Secretariat is not participating in the discussions.
“We believe that any entity that will be created in Gaza must have legitimacy through a mandate from the Council Security,” said Guterres.

The UN chief stressed that the transition period must lead to a situation in which Gaza and the West Bank will be united, and the Palestinian Authority will exercise its full control in this territory.
