The situation in the Middle East, which was already extremely unstable and developing in a dangerous direction, has worsened significantly in the last few days, Secretary-General Antonio Guterres told members of the UN Security Council on Wednesday. He spoke at a meeting convened by France in connection with the “dramatic escalation” in the region.

Every escalation in the Middle East, including the current one, serves as a prologue to the next, the UN Secretary-General has warned. According to António Guterres, it is time to stop the deadly cycle of tit-for-tat violence that is driving the people of the Middle East to the brink of destruction.

The UN chief reiterated his call for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, the unconditional release of all hostages, unimpeded humanitarian access to the enclave and a return to the two-state solution.

António Guterres also called for an end to the fighting in Lebanon and for real steps to fully implement Security Council resolutions 1559 and 1701, paving the way for diplomatic efforts to achieve sustainable peace.
