UN launches global campaign on road safety in Kazakhstan

Kazakhstan has joined the UN global awareness campaign #MakeASafetyStatement, an international initiative supported by famous figures from the worlds of sports, cinema and music, aimed at promoting safe behavior on the roads and reducing the number of deaths and injuries from road traffic accidents around the world. 

Since April 3, 2026, outdoor materials of the campaign have been placed on advertising media in Astana and Almaty, in which Novak Djokovic, Jean Reno, Michael Fassbender and Michelle Yeoh participate.

The campaign has already covered more than 80 countries and about a thousand cities around the world. By joining the initiative, Kazakhstan becomes part of a large-scale international effort to promote safe behavior on the roads.

The campaign is led by the Office of the UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for Road Safety in collaboration with JCDecaux and with the support of Saatchi. She calls on public figures, decision-makers and activists to make clear commitments to road safety. The campaign promotes simple, effective and evidence-based safe behaviors and serves as a call to action to reduce key risk factors and create safer, more inclusive and sustainable urban environments.

“Road crashes in Kazakhstan continue to claim more than two thousand lives every year, affecting families and communities across the country,” said the UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for Road Safety, Jean Todt. “Despite the progress that has been made—decreasing fatalities and strict seat belt requirements—problems such as speeding and drink-driving remain. As mobility increases, sustained efforts are needed to ensure the safety of all road users.” 

Road traffic injuries remain a major global public health and development problem. Every year, about 1.19 million people die as a result of road accidents worldwide. Road crashes remain the leading cause of death among young people. In Kazakhstan, according to the country’s General Prosecutor’s Office, 36,146 road traffic accidents were registered in 2025, of which 1,796 were fatal. Youssou N’Dour. A total of 16 global stars and Olympic champions are helping to spread the campaign’s message in the six official UN languages.

The campaign aims to accelerate behavioral change and help achieve the goals of the UN Decade of Action for Road Safety, which aims to halve road deaths and injuries by 2030.
