According to the UN, one in five people affected by conflict suffers from mental health problems. However, many cannot get the care they need, especially in low- and middle-income countries where health systems are overwhelmed and under-resourced.

In his message to mark World Mental Health Day on October 10, UN Secretary-General António Guterres called on states to prioritize supporting the mental health of people affected by conflict, disasters and other emergencies.

“We live in difficult times, full of challenges. Conflicts are increasing, more people are being forced to flee their homes, and the climate crisis is becoming more frequent and destructive,” said the Secretary-General.

This year, World Mental Health Day is dedicated to mental health services in emergencies. According to Guterres, this is “an occasion to remember the impact of crises on people’s well-being and the urgent need for support to heal those suffering and alleviate hardship.”

The Secretary General also drew attention to the fact that “they are suffering and first responders,” emphasizing that mental health services should be available to everyone.
