The Secretary-General is concerned about reports of troops being sent from North Korea to the Russian Federation and their possible deployment in the conflict zone, the UN chief’s spokesman said on behalf of him.

“This would mean a very dangerous escalation of the war in Ukraine,” the statement said.

Antonio Guterres stresses that everything must be done to avoid the “internationalization of this conflict.”

The Secretary-General also reaffirms his support for all meaningful efforts to achieve a just, lasting and comprehensive peace in Ukraine in accordance with the UN Charter, international law and General Assembly resolutions.

Earlier, reports of the dispatch of troops from the DPRK to Russia were discussed in the UN Security Council. Miroslav Jenča, the UN Assistant Secretary-General for Europe, Central Asia and the Americas, called on the parties to refrain from actions that could lead to the expansion and intensification of hostilities.

“In this regard, we also recall the relevant Security Council resolutions on the DPRK,” he said.

“The question of whether the presence of North Korean troops in Russia can fall under these resolutions is for the Security Council to decide,” Jenča added.
