Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs Rosemary DiCarlo addressed the media in Doha. UN: Afghanistan must fulfill its international human rights obligations Human Rights
Human rights, especially the rights of women and girls, and the inclusion of all members of society in public life will always remain an integral part of discussions on Afghanistan. Under-Secretary General for Political Affairs Rosemary DiCarlo said this on Tuesday.
DiCarlo spoke to the media following a meeting she and the special envoys for Afghanistan held with representatives of Afghan civil society, including human rights and women’s organizations, in the Qatari capital Doha.
The UN spokeswoman told reporters that she heard from Afghan women and men who shared their valuable ideas on the rights of women and minorities in the country, girls’ education and other issues. Helping all people in Afghanistan remains the main goal, she said.
In response to questions about whether she considers human and civil rights to be an internal issue for Afghanistan, DiCarlo emphasized that Afghanistan signed a number of treaties and international agreements on these topics. During negotiations with the de facto authorities, she made it clear to them that the country is obliged to comply with its obligations under international documents, accordingly, this is not a purely internal problem, the deputy head of the UN added.
