The main news of the day in the UN and in the world: implementation of the ceasefire in Gaza, proposals for the return of the death penalty in Kyrgyzstan, World Statistics Day.
The situation in Gaza
The UN welcomes the parties’ confirmation of their commitment to fulfilling the terms of the ceasefire in Gaza and highly appreciates the efforts of the mediators in this area, the Organization’s press service said today. At the same time, the UN is deeply concerned about all the ongoing violence in the enclave, including reports of shelling and strikes yesterday. The World Organization calls on all parties to fully comply with their obligations, ensure the protection of civilians and refrain from any steps that could lead to a resumption of hostilities or jeopardize humanitarian operations.
Death penalty in Kyrgyzstan
UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk called on the Kyrgyz authorities to immediately stop efforts to reintroduce the death penalty, warning that such a regressive move would be a serious violation of international law. Kyrgyzstan legally prohibited the death penalty in 2010 after ratifying the Second Optional Protocol to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. Türk called on the country’s authorities to focus their efforts on ensuring effective protection of the law and adequate access to justice and redress for victims of violence.
Statistics Day
Today is World Day statistics, which is celebrated every five years on October 20. On this occasion, the UN Secretary-General said that during crises such as the COVID-19 pandemic, statistical systems have proven their important role in providing data to guide life-saving decisions and recovery efforts. The International Labor Organization also emphasized that reliable and transparent data is not just a technical tool, but the basis of democracy and social justice.
