The main news of the day in the UN and in the world: a strike on a kindergarten in Sudanese Kordofan, tens of thousands of residents of Ukraine were left without electricity and heating, Washington peace agreements between DR Congo and Rwanda, the consequences of natural disasters in Southeast Asia.

Conflict in Sudan

Drone strikes on a kindergarten in Sudan’s South Kordofan have reportedly killed more than 10 children aged between 5 and 7 years, UNICEF said today. The UN Children’s Fund emphasizes that attacks on schools and hospitals are serious violations of international law. The sharp deterioration of the security situation in the Kordofan region since early November has led to massive population displacement and a worsening situation for local residents. The UN also strongly condemned the attack on a World Food Program truck that occurred last night  in North Darfur.

Strikes on Ukraine

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs reports that civilians continue to suffer as a result of attacks and fighting throughout Ukraine. In Kherson, the strikes damaged the energy infrastructure, leaving more than 40 thousand people without heating. The perinatal center was also damaged during the attack. In Odessa, 60 thousand people were left without electricity. The UN and partners continue to support the people of Ukraine. More than 1 million people have received assistance this year.

Washington Accords

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres welcomed the signing of the Washington Peace Accords between the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Rwanda, brokered by the United States.  He congratulated Presidents Felix Tshisekedi and Paul Kagame on this important milestone and commended the efforts of President Donald Trump. The UN chief called on all parties to honor their commitments, including adherence to the ceasefire called for in Security Council resolution 2773 (2025). 1600 people since mid-November. According to the latest UNICEF data, natural disasters have prevented more than 4.1 million children in Vietnam, the Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand and Malaysia from learning as normal. Across the region, nearly 11 million people were affected, including about 1.2 million forced to flee their homes. Roads, public utilities, and agricultural land were damaged.
