At least 700 people have been killed and thousands injured in the bombing of Lebanon. Lebanon: UN Secretary-General calls on all sides to ‘step back from the brink’ Peace and Security
The Secretary-General is gravely concerned by the sharp escalation of events in Beirut over the past 24 hours, according to a statement issued by his press service on Saturday on behalf of the UN chief.
“This cycle of violence must stop now and all sides must step back from the brink. The people of Lebanon, the people of Israel and the region as a whole cannot afford all-out war,” Antonio Guterres warned.
According to official sources, the Israeli military has attacked the Lebanese capital, Beirut. The strike reportedly targeted the main headquarters of Hezbollah.
The Secretary-General urged the parties to reaffirm their commitment to the full implementation of Security Council resolution 1701 (2006) and to immediately return to the cessation of hostilities.
He also reiterated his call for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and the release of all hostages held there.
