TV correspondent Mustafa al-Bayed reports from Gaza. Palestinian journalists awarded UNESCO/Guillermo Cano World Prize Culture and Education
Palestinian journalists covering the Gaza Strip have won the 2024 UNESCO/Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize. The award ceremony took place on May 2 on the sidelines of the World Press Freedom Conference in Santiago, Chile.
“In these dark and hopeless times, we want to express our solidarity and recognition to those Palestinian journalists who are covering this crisis under such dramatic circumstances,” said Mauricio Weibel, chairman of the international jury of media professionals. “We as humanity owe a huge debt of gratitude to their courage and commitment to freedom of expression.”
UNESCO expressed sadness over the deaths of 26 journalists and media workers from October 7, 2023.
“This year’s awards ceremony once again reminds us of the importance of collective action to ensure that journalists around the world can continue to perform its vital work of reporting and investigating the facts,” emphasized UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay.
UNESCO supports journalists reporting in areas of crisis and armed conflict. The organization distributes essential supplies to journalists in Gaza and creates jobs and grants for media workers in Ukraine and Sudan. UNESCO also provides protective equipment and training for journalists in Haiti and supports independent media in Afghanistan.
