More than a million Sudanese refugees in Chad are facing cuts in humanitarian aid, UN agencies said ahead of the third anniversary of the conflict in Sudan. According to the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the UN World Food Program (WFP), the funding gap is 428 million. dollars.

Chad has hosted 1.3 million Sudanese refugees, and today one in every thirteen people in the country is a refugee. Despite the enormous workload, the Chadian government is keeping its borders open.

Currently, UNHCR’s resources are sufficient to provide basic assistance to only 40 percent of refugees. As a result, many people have no housing, and in some areas people receive less than half the minimum amount of water required per day. children.

Meanwhile, more than 243 thousand people remain in the border areas in the east of the country. In these conditions, families sleep in the open or in temporary shelters, where disease, insecurity and weather conditions pose a constant threat. “The situation in eastern Chad clearly shows how lack of funding affects people,” said UNHCR Representative in Chad Patrice Auansu.

“At the end of 2025, we only had about a third of the resources needed to fully respond to the refugee crisis in the east of the country. Given how dire the situation already is, without urgent donor support, deeper cuts and even more difficult conditions for families fleeing war are expected this year,” he added.

WFP is also cash-strapped and has less than half the resources it needs. The organization provides food assistance to more than a million people in areas hosting refugees, but has already cut its volume in half. Women and children are particularly affected by this situation, with nutrition programs for new arrivals also being significantly reduced.

Furthermore, despite investments by WFP and UNHCR in long-term solutions such as integration and social protection, emergency assistance remains very important.

“We have less than half the resources we need, and we are unable to provide enough food to those who need it most,” said WFP Chad Representative Sarah Gordon-Gibson.

“This will force people to resort to extreme survival measures and put their lives at risk,” she warned.

UNHCR and WFP call on the international community to urgently mobilize funding to assist refugees in Chad.
